Major Construction Work To Undergo in Altenessen and Südviertel

16. September 2026

Just a few days after the construction around the Berliner Platz area concluded, a new remodelling plan of the infrastructure of the tram has been announced by the Ruhrbahn, leading to further traffic restrictions within Essen.

From the 5th of September, the Ruhrbahn will be carrying out extensive track and junction renewal on the tram stops around the Moltkestraße and the Altenessen station, with the project expected to be finalized on the 18th of October. The latest construction work will mostly affect passengers of tram lines 101 and 106.

Citing the same reason as in the month of July, the Ruhrbahn’s decision was influenced by the need to further upgrade the local tram infrastructure to better adjust for the future. Buses are scheduled to replace road sections, which are no longer accessible by either tram route.

Replacement services

Tram line 101 between Rathaus Essen and Finefraustraße will end its services at the Aalto-Theater station; however, replacement buses (SEV 101) will be provided starting from the Rathaus Essen stop. Most significantly, the 101 will continue to stop at Berliner Platz and the Essen Central Station.

Work on the Tram line 106 between Altenessen and Helenenstraße will be carried out across two construction phases. The first period is now underway with replacement buses (SEV) supplying the road section between Altenessen station and Rüttenscheider Stern, concluding altogether on the 20th of September.

A day later marks the final stage in the extensive construction renewal, wherein services between the Rathaus Essen and Rüttenscheider Stern will cease until the 18th of October. Students will be able to access Essen Central Station in regular fashion.

The temporary replacement sections are set up near the NightExpress stop area, carrying the same name as before.

And, lastly, the NightExpress operations of lines NE6 and NE7 will be disrupted by the ongoing project. To learn more, visit Tram 101 u. 106: Busse statt Bahnen
